About Us

Howarth & Co is based in London, England. It was established in late 2002 by its founders; Gil Howarth, Chief Executive and Valerie Howarth, Business Development Director.

During its first 5 years, Howarth & Co had a number of diverse commissions, the most notable of which was supporting Alfred McAlpine Plc, civil engineering contractor, on the introduction of new Finance, Project Management, HR and Payroll information technology systems across the Group. Howarth & Co worked in partnership with Alfred McAlpine, providing the Programme Management team including Gil as Programme Director. Primary responsibilities included development of integrated business processes and the management of IT hardware and software and implementation and testing.

From 2008, Howarth & Co specialised in railway training and skills development when Gil founded the embryonic National Skills Academy for Railway Engineering (NSARE). Following two years of Research & Development, NSARE was formally established in November 2010 with the support of the UK Government. Howarth & Co was awarded a services contract to develop NSARE’s products and services; Gil and Valerie were appointed Chief Executive and Events & Facilities Manager respectively and a number of other senior positions were filled by Howarth & Co staff, including Elaine Clark who fulfilled a number of roles including Head of Training & Skills and latterly Head of Business Services.

After only 5 years of operation, NSARE established itself as the UK’s leading railway training and skills development organisation. The Howarth & Co services contract came to an end in June 2015. It was agreed at that time that NSARE would concentrate on the UK rail industry, enabling Howarth & Co to develop the model internationally.
